Health Improvement National Picture

Government Office Public Health Teams work with partners on a wide range of programmes and initiatives designed to improve the health of people living in their region. These include measures to promote healthy eating and reduce teenage pregnancy.

Specific initiatives include:

  • 5 A Day Programme – a scheme that aims to improve people’s access to, and awareness of, fruit and vegetables.
  • Choosing Health – a White Paper consultation document launched by John Reid in 2004.
  • Local Exercise Action Pilots – designed to identify and test the best ways of getting people more active.
  • Teenage Pregnancy – a national strategy designed to halve the under-18 conception rate and increase the participation of teenage mothers in education, training or work.
  • Providing co-ordinated and comprehensive regional approaches to tobacco control to reduce smoking rates and the associated burden of tobacco-related illness.
