Luton drugs unit nominated for national award

Published: Thu, 14 Aug 2008 10:45:00

An organisation, which aims to disrupt the illegal drug supply in Luton, has been nominated for a national award and the chance to win £10,000 for future work.

The Divisional Intelligence Unit in Luton targets the suppliers of illegal drugs such as cocaine, crack and heroin in specific areas with high drug abuse.

Team members develop and disseminate intelligence against drug suppliers and join forces with other agencies to bring the suppliers to justice.

They support some of the most hard to reach groups in Luton, working with the Bengali and Polish communities who are particularly vulnerable to the effects of illegal drugs.

The organisation has now been nominated for the national Tackling Drugs Changing Lives Awards 2008.

Recognising, celebrating and rewarding the unsung heroes who change lives every day, the awards are open to an individual or a team who have really made a difference in their local community in tackling drugs.

The winners will receive a prize of ?10,000 for their project or organisation to spend on the prevention or treatment of drug misuse.

Greg Horsford, Head of the Divisional Intelligence Unit said: "We make use of all the resources at our disposal to target the individuals who cause misery

in our local communities and prosecute on every occasion that we have sufficient evidence.

"Two recent operations run by the Unit have resulted in 48 Class A Drug dealers being arrested and convicted to more than 200 years imprisonment. A Special Constabulary targeting Cannabis factories has also resulted in 21 Cannabis factories being dismantled with ten arrests being made.

"Removing suppliers gives us a golden opportunity to access drug users, and we work closely with our partners to ensure treatment is available. If we can turn people away from drugs we can also turn people away from crime and reduce the number of victims in the county.

"Being nominated is recognition in itself for our work and to win the award would be extremely beneficial to the Unit as we could use the prize money to further develop our services."
