Sustainable development in the East of England

Published: Thu, 31 Jan 2008 16:00:00

Figures detailing environmental, social and economic progress in the East of England have been published today, covering a wide range of areas such as health, employment and the environment and shows real achievements across all regions.

This is the first year the annual report has gained a snapshot of how people feel about living in the UK through the measurement of wellbeing.

The statistics show that people living in the East of England are as satisfied with their lives as most people in the country. The region has the highest percentage of household waste that was recycled in 2006-07. Burglary and vehicle crimes were amongst the lowest of the regions, as was the fear of crime. The proportion of males of working age in employment was the higher in the region than elsewhere. Infant mortality in the region was amongst the lowest, and female life expectancy amongst the highest in the country. Deaths from suicide were the lowest in the country.

The region has seen the largest increase in the proportion of local sites to have unsatisfactory or poor local environmental quality.
