Published: Mon, 28 Jan 2008 15:30:00

Removing barriers to learning and raising education standards in the region through partnership working was the main focus at an event at Rowley Mile Racecourse in Newmarket on Friday (25 January).

Hosted by the Government Office for the East of England, the conference was held to provide regional partners including headteachers, local authority officers and senior officials from the Department for Children, Schools and Families with the opportunity to discuss how they can narrow the attainment gap between different groups of pupils and raise education standards in the region.

Keynote speakers included Chris Hilliard, Director for Children and Learners, Government Office for the East of England, David Bell, Permanent Secretary, Department for Children Schools and Families and Malcolm Newsam, Director of Children's Services, Bedfordshire County Council.

Speaking at the end of the conference Chris Hiliard said;

"Children and young people with high levels of attainment and skills can place a vital role in the country's prosperity within a global economy - this conference, supported by Local Authority Elected Members and Officers, Head Teachers and Governors, will help us all focus on how we can remove potential barriers to learning."
