Creative Careers’ Fair Pulls In Crowds Of 700

Published: Mon, 13 Mar 2006 00:00:00

An overwhelming 700 people attended a Creative Careers’ Fair at The Garage in Norwich on Sunday 5 March. A further event takes place at The Junction in Cambridge on Saturday 25 March from 10am to 4pm, entry is free.

The Garage in Norwich opened its doors to an overwhelming 700 people for a Creative Careers’ Fair on Sunday 5th March.

Following on from the success of last year’s Fair at The Junction in Cambridge, this year The Garage joined in to double the size! The event allowed young people of all ages to receive one-to-one advice on education, training and jobs in the arts and creative industries.

Darren Grice, General Manager at The Garage:
“It was really great to see so many people taking up the opportunity to get advice direct from professionals working in the creative industries. The day had a real buzz!”

Funded by Arts Council England, East, Creative Careers’ Fairs give people the chance to meet and talk to professionals from the industry about how to get started, as well as learning more about the courses and training opportunities available at colleges and universities.

There are practical sessions allowing people to try a range of activities. In Norwich, attendees could see what it was like to be a TV weather presenter filmed in front of a green screen and then watch as they were edited to appear in any setting they chose.

Wendy Hurrell, weather presenter for Anglia TV, was at The Garage:
“The creative careers fair at the garage in Norwich has been the most impressive I've seen, more than rivaling ones I have attended in London.”

Other contributors sharing their experience on the day included dancers, artists, directors, designers, actors, TV producers, writers, press officers and photographers.

As one of the key contributors, The Film & Digital Media Exchange (FDMX) are keen to promote film and digital media at the events. Rachael Murray, Event Producer, FDMX: “FDMX are delighted to be able to support the Creative Careers’ Fairs as they are a fantastic way for industry and education to work together to encourage and support an enthusiastic and talented new influx of entrants into one of the eastern region’s fastest growing industries.”

In addition, colleges and arts organisations – including City College Norwich, Norwich School of Art & Design, University of Hertfordshire, Norwich Theatre Royal & Playhouse, Community Music East, Future Radio, the BBC, Northern Ballet, Norfolk Dance, Creative Arts East, Eggbox Publishing, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, 2bitTV, The New Writing Partnership, Screen East, Access To Music, Norwich Puppet Theatre, Shaping The Future and The Junction – were on hand to give advice.

One of the arts organisations available, Community Music East, commented:
“Impressive turn out – must have been marketed well.”

If you missed the Fair at The Garage, the next one takes place at The Junction in Cambridge on Saturday 25th March from 10am to 4pm, entry is free.

Arts Council England is the national development agency for the arts. Every year, they invest over £500 million of public funds in the arts in England including funding from the National Lottery. Arts Council England, East is one of nine regional offices, and covers Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk and the unitary authorities of Luton, Peterborough, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock.
