Beacon Councils National Picture

The beacon scheme aims to raise standards in all councils by spreading best practice. Each year about a dozen direct service and cross-cutting service areas are chosen for the Award of Beacon Status. Authorities which are awarded Beacon Status are given funding to share best practice with others, over a period of three years following the award. Government Offices contribute to the assessment process for Beacon Councils and attend some assessment visits.

The service and cross - cutting service areas for which Beacon Status will be awarded are sharply focused and drawn from more general themes such as:

  • Tackling crime and improving community safety;
  • Providing local people with the best possible education;
  • Improving the health of the local community;
  • Providing the best possible housing services for local people;
  • Ensuring that older people have active, independent and secure lives;
  • Tackling social exclusion;
  • Providing effective and efficient social services.
