Environmental Issues: the National Picture

Protection of the environment requires activity on many different fronts - from acting to limit global environmental threats, such as climate change, to safeguarding individuals from the effects of poor air quality or toxic chemicals. Such actions also produce benefits for housing (through improved energy efficiency of buildings) and economic growth (through more efficient use of resources, such as re-use, recycling and recovery of waste).

Actions to protect the environment produce benefits such as:

  • housing - through improved energy efficiency of buildings
  • social progress - through action to combat fuel poverty
  • economic growth - through more efficient use of resources, such as re-use, recycling and recovery of waste.

Government Offices have the key role of communicating the Government’s environmental and sustainable development policies to a wide range of organisations and individuals. We co-ordinate regional activity, working in partnership with other regional organisations including the Regional Development Agencies, Regional Assemblies, the regional offices of the Environment Agency, other governmental agencies and non-governmental organisations.

We also assist with the development of Government departments' policies through ensuring the regional perspective is championed at Government level.
