Biodiversity

The East of England has habitats of national and international status. Extensive habitat creation is also taking place, particularly wetlands, sometimes because coastal erosion, exacerbated by climate change, threatens existing sites.

There is also the opportunity to embed design into areas of growth such that a variety of species may be encouraged, and similarly agricultural practices in a Region where farming is still very extensive, continue to pay more heed to wildlife opportunities.

The Government Office for the East of England are members of the Regional Biodiversity Forum, and put its thoughts in the context of wider strategic issues. For example, the Forum has engaged with the development of the East of England Plan. There is also encouragement to look at the opportunities for maximising biodiversity in built development. The Government Office for the East of England will also discuss the opportunity to use forthcoming Landfill Tax monies to further biodiversity projects in the light of a range of regional priorities.
