Violent Crime
Within the East of England, there are a number of initiatives undertaken by the local Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs) with the specific aim to look at ways of reducing violent crime. Violent crime includes Domestic Violence.
Violent crime – as it is recorded by the police – includes robbery, sexual offences and ‘Violence against the person’ offences, such as assault and murder. However, most recorded violent crime is low-level thuggery, while the UK has one of the lowest murder rates amongst the European Union, with London being below average for EU capital cities. Government Offices have an active role in the effort to continue bringing down the level of violent crime, which has fallen by 35 per cent since its peak in 1995.

The police have had considerable success in reducing Violent Crime in Norwich through their ‘Operation Enterprise’ initiative. This is a project aimed at reducing violent crime and anti-social behaviour through multi-agency visits, training door staff and licensees, improved transport services, patrolling activities, use of passive drugs dogs, enforcement activity, specialist workers and administrative support. The operation is targeting ‘hot-spot’ areas.
Government Office for the East of England has supported a selection of Domestic Violence initiatives via Home Office funding including: The development of a comprehensive inter-agency training pack and initiative in Suffolk, a pilot domestic violence one-stop help shop in Norwich, Advocacy Service in Cambridgeshire, regional conferences to share good practice and promote inter-agency working.
