The Crime and Disorder Act 1998, amended by the Police Reform Act 2002, sets out statutory requirements for responsible authorities to work with other local agencies and organisations to develop and implement strategies to tackle crime and disorder and misuse of drugs in their area.

Statutory and voluntary agencies, Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs) and other multi-agency partnerships are all working to deliver these initiatives, the objectives of which are:
- to reduce crime
- to reduce the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour
- to reduce the harm caused by illegal drugs within the region
In 2007-08, the Government Office for the East of England is responsible for the following funding streams:
- Basic Command Unit Fund
- Domestic Violence
- Tackling Violent Crime
The way funding was provided to Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnerships changed as of April 2005 with the implementation of the Safer and Stronger Communities Fund. This fund brings together a number of Home Office and Communities and Local Government (CLG) funding streams into one single pot. Some of the funds mentioned above are included in this. Overall, the Safer and Stronger Communities Fund has the same basic objective as the previous year’s funding, which is to reduce crime, reduce the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour and to reduce the harm caused by illegal drugs within our region.
