Government Offices make a regional contribution to the Government’s aim to build a safe, just and tolerant society, protect the public and ensure the balance between the rights and responsibilities of individuals, families and communities is properly maintained. Government Offices also deliver the four key themes of the National Drug Strategy.

Government Offices make a regional contribution to the Government’s aim to make communities safer and to reduce the harm caused by alcohol and drugs. The regions 46 Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs) and the ten Drug and Alcohol Action Teams (DAATs) are at the forefront of this work. The GO East Crime & Drugs Team support the CDRPs and DAATs by:
- providing advice and support in delivering the government's crime and drugs Public Service Agreement targets
- providing a link between the partnerships and central government departments.
- monitoring partnership performance through the Local Area Agreements.
- providing partnership challenge and improvement support
- sharing effective practice.
- providing training opportunities, conferences and seminars
Government Offices provide links between crime reduction and drug action programmes and other Government initiatives such as social inclusion and the regeneration of deprived communities. We work closely with the following co-located teams:
- Home Office Regional Research Analysis Team, which undertakes research and analysis of crime patterns and trends with an emphasis on identifying, evaluating and disseminating good practice to CDRPs.
- Drugs National Treatment Agency (NTA) Team, which drives the delivery of drugs treatment services throughout England.
- National Offender Management Service (NOMS) Strategic Partnership Manager.
- Regional Public Health
Crime in the East of England
The East of England is the safest region to live in England and Wales, at 83 offences per 1,000 population the region has the lowest recorded crime rate in England and Wales. Recorded crime from 2005/06 to 2006/07 decreased by 3% in the region. Over the same period there was a reduction across all offence groups, apart from criminal damage which remained stable.

Regional Alcohol Conference, March 2008
GO-East, the Regional Public Health Directorate (Department of Health) and the National Treatment Agency held a conference in March to identify priorities for a work programme to reduce the harm caused by alcohol misuse.
The event was part of a regional response to the Safe, Sensible, Social -The Next Steps in the National Alcohol Strategy document, published by the Home Office in June 2007. It was timely to bring those involved together at this point as the regional roll out of the national strategy coincides with the recent introduction of the 30 new cross-cutting Public Service Agreements (PSAs). These include a focus on reducing alcohol use by young people, alcohol-related crime and disorder and the number of alcohol-related admissions.
Building on the last regional conference in April 2006, the day provided an opportunity for practitioners and strategists to hear from those fronting the development of national policy, and to share the learning from good practice in developing and delivering services to address the problems arising from excessive drinking. Part of the event showcased the findings from a range of pilot projects, funded by the Home Office, to provide examples of how such problem can be tackled successfully. These included projects dealing with alcohol-related violent crime, issues to do with under-age drinking and the improvement of data-sharing procedures between A&E units, based on the Cardiff model.
We now present a full report of the discussions and issues that emerged from the day, along with presentations from all the speakers and workshop sessions. The report will feed into the further development of the regional alcohol strategy, jointly owned by GO-East, Regional Public Health Group and the National Treatment Agency.
